Imp on a mushroomThe Municipality of Merlo, San Luis in Argentina, decided that a large 100-year-old Eucalyptus tree needed to be trimmed. The large branches often obstructed visibility for motorists and also caused a danger to the overhead light and telephone wires.

The trimming took some time and when traffic was restored to the road, dusk was falling. Locals driving through the area started reporting that they had seen “some little men coming out of the amputated tree and walking single file toward the library.”

One woman recalled that their clothing had a “brownish hue”. Cecillia de Gabrele, an employee at the library who fielded several phone calls at her workplace, added that for some years there had been reports of “imps” in that district, possibly due to the abundance of flora. Many people claim to have seen little people in-between the branches and the shadows.

Locals believe that the trimming of the tree caused the “imps” to abandon their home and to seek shelter elsewhere. These sightings echo beliefs regarding fairies, sprites and gnomes of many northern European cultures.

Could there truly exist a race of “little people” that we have not discovered? Could it simply have been the overactive imagination of the locals?
