“Ufologists are predicting a record number of UFO sightings in Britain this year after an explosion of alleged UFOs reported to the Ministry of Defence in the first six months of the year.

The Sun reports a total of 231 sightings passed on to the MoD so far this year; compared to to 285 in 2008, 135 in 2007 and 97 in 2006.

The newspaper quoted leading UFO expert Nick Pope as saying: “We are now on track for a record year.”"

Over the past year or so, a number of British pilots have come forward with their stories of UFO encounters. The most recent one come from Captain Ray Bower who spotted two objects at least a mile wide.

“One of the largest UFOs ever seen has been observed by the crew and passengers of an airliner over the Channel Islands.

An official air-miss report on the incident several weeks ago appears in Pilot magazine.

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, flying close to Alderney first spotted the object, described as “a cigar-shaped brilliant white light”.”

Some people have said that his sighting was nothing more than illuminated clouds, but a pilot of his experience his hardly likely to misidentify this phenomenon not once but twice!

The recent spate of UFO incidents in the UK have led to renewed calls for the MOD to investigate the sightings.

One of the most significant UFO incidents in recent years was the observation of a UFO by a crew of a police helicopter and military personnel in south Wales. Shortly after a corporal on guard duty in Shropshire took video footage of a ‘fleet’ of objects which zigzagged across the sky.

Nick Pope, the former UFO expert at the Ministry of Defence said that after these sightings, an inquiry was of vital importance. Radar tapes, video footage and witness statements should be examined as a part of the investigation, he said.

So far the MOD has declined to comment on the incidents, although a spokesman has confirmed that the Shropshire video footage had been handed over to MOD officials.
