They may look like winter’s answer to crop circles, but these mysterious snow rolls are in fact a rare natural phenomenon usually found only in the world’s most remote and frozen regions.
Also known as snowrollers, snow bales and snow doughnuts, they form mostly in unusual conditions created by a precise combination of snow, ice, wind, temperature and moisture on the prairies of North America.
But this week’s frozen weather has allowed the snow cylinders to make a freak appearance in the UK.
Ron Trevett, 55, and his wife Aileen, 54, readers of The Daily Telegraph, were stunned when they stumbled across the mysterious formations as they walked their dogs in a field near their home in Yeovil, Somerset.
“We saw them from a distance on the ridge of the field, and we thought some kids had been playing up there and making giant snowballs,” said Mr Trevett.

December 20, 2009 London, England – The British Ministry of Defence MoD has confirmed that on December 1, 2009, it has suddenly and mysteriously shut down its UFO phone hotline and email address for public reports at the time of a UFO flap in the U.K.
The MoD originally in November 2009 explained its surprising cutoffs this way:
“The MOD has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life. However, in over fifty years, no UFO report has revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom.
The MOD has no specific capability for identifying the nature of such sightings. There is no Defence benefit in such investigation and it would be an inappropriate use of defence resources. Furthermore, responding to reported UFO sightings diverts MOD resources from tasks that are relevant to Defence.

The Ministry of Defence has closed its UFO investigation unit, it was revealed today.
A hotline and email address for the public to report strange sights in the skies to the military were quietly shut down on December 1.
The MoD said it had received thousands of reports of UFOs over more than 50 years, but none revealed any evidence of a potential threat to the UK or substantial proof of the existence of extra-terrestrials.
It justified the decision to axe the X Files-style unit by saying there was no ‘defence value’ in investigating the sightings.
