Do “chupacabras” live outside the world of myth?

Some residents of Hood County, Texas, believe two bizarre beasts killed near Fort Worth are real-life examples of the legendary “goat suckers” of Latin-American lore.

“I’m not sure on that part. All I know is, it wasn’t normal,” Animal Control Officer Frank Hackett told NBC DFW. “It was ugly, real ugly. I’m not going to tell no lie on that one.”

Hackett shot and killed the creature inside a barn owned by Jack Farr.

“This had deer ears, big teeth and pinkish skin like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Farr said.

Several miles away, a rancher captured and killed another similar specimen this week — sparking speculation that there might be a pack of chupacabras, which, according to legend, kill and suck the blood of livestock.

A small North Texas community is getting stirred up about some mysterious animals roaming around.

Two creatures have been killed in three days, near farms, only a few miles apart. Some are calling them chupacabras; even animal control officers are unsure what they are.

In his 25 years, David Hewitt has seen plenty of varmints running around, but nothing like the animal he shot on Friday.

“I had no idea what it could be,” he said.

He shot it when it came too close to his cattle.”From a distance, he looked like a hairless chihuahua, only much bigger,” Hewitt said.

His only conclusion?”From all indications, it seemed to be a chupacabra.”

Chupacabra is an exotic name for a mythical blood-sucking creature.

“A UFO resembling a huge fireball was reported over Lake Arlington on the evening of the Fourth of July.
I know what you’re thinking. We were all thinking it also. But with multiple reports received in the newsroom it would be irresponsible to not at least acknowledge the reports and to do a little digging.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Brian Haddock was left more than curious at what he and his children saw traveling from the west over the lake.

“I know it’s 4th of July, but this was big enough that the kids thought it was an airplane crashing,” said Haddock. “It traveled from east to west and just about began on one horizon and ended on the western horizon.”

Haddock wasn’t alone. Brent Widener also saw the object and described it as a “glowing circle, flying close to the ground.”"

During Civil War times, with her husband fighting in the war, Sara Jane and her newborn lived alone in a house out in the woods on a wagon trail along the Neches River, Texas.

One day she received word that the Union soldiers were on their way, so she placed her baby in a wicker basket and set the basket under the wooden bridge that was near her house and returned home.
Neches Bridge
Once the Union soldiers had left, Sara Jane made her way back to the bridge to retrieve her baby, but when she got there, the baby was nowhere to be found. The Neches River had risen and carried the baby away.

Sara Jane searched the banks of the river for hours, screaming and crying, but to no avail. Grief striken and unable to find her child, Sara Jane hung herself from a tree which hung low over the small wagon trail near the wooden bridge.

On certain nights if you stand on the bridge at midnight, you may see the light of a lantern flickering in the woods and hear Sara Jane as she moans and calls for the baby she left under the bridge. The unlucky few can sometimes also hear the cries of the baby in the distance.
