Princess is the star of New Jersey’s Popcorn Park Zoo and she has correctly picked the winner of five of the last six Super Bowls.
She went 14 and 6 predicting regular season and playoff games this year, and has a lifetime record of 88-51.
The Bactrian camel’s prognostication skills flow from her love of graham crackers. Zoo general manager John Bergmann places a cracker and writes the name of the competing teams on each hand. Whichever hand Princess nibbles from is her pick.
On Wednesday, she made her pick with no hesitation at all, predicting bad news for Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, even though the Las Vegas oddsmakers have New England favored by about 3 points.
Her only miscue in the big game was picking the Indianapolis Colts over the New Orleans Saints two years ago, indicating that even camels know it’s generally risky to go against Peyton Manning.
“It started out when a local radio station was looking to have some fun, so they asked Princess who was going to win a particular game each week, and it just took off from there,” Bergmann said. “Now we have guys calling up on Sunday morning wanting to know who Princess has picked that week. One guy even asked if she does lottery numbers.”
Her best season was 2008, when she got 17 out of 22 games right, including correctly picking the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the Super Bowl.
Princess doesn’t do point spreads. But she has nearly mastered the art of picking straight-up winners.
The cunning camel was once the personal pet of heiress Doris Duke, the only child of tobacco and electric energy tycoon James Buchanan Duke.
Doris Duke raised Princess and her sister Babe from youngsters, Bergmann said.
The pair of camels had their own barn, and spent summers at Duke’s Rhode Island estate. During bad weather, they were put up in the solarium.
After Duke’s death in 1993, the camels stayed on her estate in Hillsborough. Babe died several years ago, leaving just Princess.
When Princess’ caretaker was about to retire, the estate offered Princess to Popcorn Park Zoo, which took her in. The zoo cares for abandoned and abused animals.
Raffaele Bendandi, who claimed to have forecast numerous earthquakes and, has according to internet rumors, predicted a “big one” to strike Rome on tomorrow, May 11.
Bendandi, who died in 1979 aged 86, believed earthquakes were the result of the combined movements of the planets, the moon and the sun and were perfectly predictable.
Through his studies he has been able to predict some earthquakes in Italy:
– Marsica earthquake of 13 January 1915
– Marche earthquake of January 2, 1924
– Earthquake in Friuli, 6 May 1976.
In his 1923 forecast of the quake to hit the central Adriatic region of the Marches on January 2 the following year, he was wrong by two days but Italy’s main newspaper Corriere della Sera still ran a front page article on “The man who forecasts earthquakes.”
Bendandi’s fame grew and in 1927 he was awarded a knighthood by Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. During his long career his theories were studied by several prominent foreign astronomers.
Thousands of Romans are now expecting to leave Rome tomorrow in fear of being caught in a devastating earthquake.
National television network RAI has run programs aimed at calming rising panic among Romans. The civil protection agency has issued statements reiterating the official scientific view that earthquakes can’t be predicted.
Yet still some Romans feel that it is better to be safe than sorry.
“I’m going to tell the boss I’ve got a medical appointment and take the day off,” barman Fabio Mengarelli told Reuters. “If I have to die I want to die with my wife and kids, and masses of people will do the same as me.”
Chef Tania Cotorobai also said she would be taking a day off in the country. “I don’t know if I really believe it but if you look at the internet you see everything and the opposite of everything, and it end up making you nervous,” she said.
The current panic appears to be due more to fear-mongering in the age of internet than to Bendandi himself.
Paola Lagorio, the president of an association dedicated to Bendandi and which preserves all his manuscripts, says they make no reference to any earthquake around Rome in 2011.

A major earthquake will strike California on Thursday, causing major damage and likely to cause tsunami’s … or so says the website Quake Prediction.
When this was first announced on the site, which is not recognized in any way by the US Geological Survey, it went viral on Twitter. It spread so fast that even the debunking website, Snopes has written an article about it.
The Southern California Earthquake Center and the USGS have both issued statements saying that scientists can not yet predict earthquakes in advance and that neither organization has ever made a prediction.
It is unclear how the author claims to get the information about possible quakes, but it will be interesting to see whether he has access to information that mainstream scientists do not.
