An unidentified flying object exploded at about 10:00 AM on May 27th over the northern part of Phu Quoc Island, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

This is a region off the coast of the southern province of Kien Giang. Col. Nguyen Van Qui, military chief of the island district, reported the explosion and consequent discovery of debris.

It is reported that many residents found what are described as “many gray metal pieces, including a 1.5 meter long piece”.

The island district authorities on Phu Quoc quickly contacted airline companies in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, but so far none have confirmed any accidents involving their flights.

The explosion happened at about 8 kilometers, or five miles, above the ground, the VNA reported, “and perhaps it was a plane, but authorities could not identify whether it was a civil or military aircraft.”

The Phu Quoc Island People’s Committee mobilized local armed forces and volunteers to help rescue any survivors, believing there had been a disaster, but there were none to be found. Col. Nguyen Van Qui was the person who described the craft as an “unidentified flying object” according to the VNA.

The deputy commander of the Cambodian Air Force, Kung Mony, said the initial determination was that a foreign plane had crashed in the Cambodian province of Kampot, but that suggestion was later retracted. Villagers in Kampot confirmed that they heard a loud explosion and then found small chunks of metal near the coast, presumably from the craft. They did not elaborate as to what type of metal it was.

Skull collection at the Tuol Sleng Genocide MuseumIt is strange how the human mind reacts in strange situations. Part of it readily accepts that what you are experiencing is well in the realms of the paranormal, yet another part of your mind keeps looking for the rational explanation. This is how I felt leaving the second cellblock.

Was there a rational explanation for all these things that had happened? Was it merely the wind blowing the door (even though the evening was totally calm)? Did my weight on the bed move the box enough for the lid to close (even though the lid was pretty solid and couldn’t really just flip shut)?

By this time I was truly heading away from merely jumpy and nervous and into the realms of scared and terrified! Nevertheless I headed towards the photo gallery and skull collection building. (more…)

Brick cells in the Tuol Sleng Genocide MuseumFeeling a bit shaken from my experience in the V.I.P. room, I made my way to the next level.

It was here that lines of prisoners were kept chained together. They were not allowed to talk to each other and were brutally beaten and electrocuted for the most minor of offenses.

The hall was pitch dark and I had to use the torch which I was still clutching onto for dear life. I walked slowly down the length of the now empty hall but saw and felt nothing out of the ordinary. I decided to move on to the next building. As I came to the door, out the corner of my eye I swear I glimpsed movement about halfway along the hall. Whether this was ghost, shadow person or imagination I have no idea but when I looked properly, it was gone. (more…)

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (photo by Djeyli)Usually when a person goes out ‘ghost hunting’, you need to make certain preparations. For a start there is your kit: still camera, video camera, thermometer, electro-static detector to name a few. Here I was: About to enter the most haunted place in Cambodia with virtually nothing!

My video camera had been left back home, the flash on my camera had been damaged on the flight and forget about any of the other equipment. Another vital component I didn’t have was a partner to accompany me.

I was about to enter the most haunted place in Cambodia alone, with no equipment except for a small torch and not really knowing what to expect. I had a choice: call it off or go for it. Against all common sense, I decided to go for it! (more…)
