One of the strangest and yet under-reported things was discovered in 2007.
Mark Holley, a professor of underwater archaeology at Northwestern Michigan College, discovered a series of stones – some of them arranged in a circle and one of which seemed to show carvings of a mastodon – 40-feet beneath the surface waters of Lake Michigan.
By all accounts this would make them at least 10 000 years old which is about the time when the first humans moved over the land bridge into North America.

The discovery was made by accident when a team went out to chart old boatwrecks using sonar. Some of the results jumped out at the researchers – why should stones be arranged in a circle? And why should one have carvings on that looks like a mastadon?
Many people were initially skeptical of the claim, but it must be remembered that Michigan does have verifiable petroglyph sites and standing stones. Michigan Univeristy has expressed some interest in the site, although were quick to say that they too were skeptical.
Could this site be another Stonehenge lurking deep in the depths on Lake Michigan?
