Guatemala is in the midst of quite the hubbub of excitement over the claims of a retired German teacher.
Joachim Rittstieg says ancient Dresden Codex and Mayan priests guided him to the legendary Atlantis in eastern Guatemala.
The city is underwater and is laden with untouched treasure, according to Rittstieg. These include eight tons of gold tablets.
He claims to have found Atlantis following his visit to Lake Izabel in eastern Guatemala. Instead of being dismissed, Mr. Rittstieg has garnered a lot of interest by the media.
The buzz over Rittstieg is “very strange,” says Oswaldo Chinchilla, a Guatemalan archaeology professor and Mayan museum curator. “This is complete fantasy,” he says.
Rittstieg counters that he can’t help it that he found the city and the experts didn’t.
He claims the US Navy helped detect the exact location after following instructions in the Dresden Codex and the assistance of Mayan priests.
“They say it cannot be. But I have the basic information now,” says Rittstieg, who is seeking funding for an excavation.
Sometimes reality is just as strange as the movies. In the days of Nazi Germany, top leaders did indeed send out ‘Indiana Jones’ type people to find artifacts which they felt had mystical powers. One of these artifacts was one of the mysterious Mayan crystal skulls which has now been found:
A MYSTERIOUS crystal skull thought to have belonged to Hitler’s SS chief Heinrich Himmler has been discovered in Germany.
The artefact, found resting on a beam beneath the roof of a house in a Bavarian village, has excited treasure hunters.
They believe it may be part of a larger trove of bounty once owned by the most sinister man in Nazi Germany.
Indications are that it was part of a series worshipped by ancient Mayan cultures in what is now Mexico – where, legend has it, the skulls are vital to stop the world ending next year.
Himmler, who oversaw the extermination of Jews, was spellbound by myths and legends until his suicide after being captured by the British.
He financed expeditions all over the world by Indiana Jones-type SS men seeking proof of the “supremacy” of Aryan man.

In my research I have found so many stories of the paranormal from all over the world. From the Tokoloshe in South Africa to the Aswang in the Philippines, from the Yeren in China to close encounters in Russia.
Most of us westerners usually focus on the stories that are reported by western press and we miss out on a lot of stories from countries that are third world. Some sites, such as Inexplicata, have brought to light some of these stories, but for the most part, they remain hidden in obscure (at least to most of us) newspapers and reports.
I have set myself a challenge for the coming year or so – telling at least one story of the weird, strange, bizarre or paranormal from each country in the world.
This is where I need your help. If you have a story of the strange or paranormal from your country, or even just some local folklore or legend, please send me a message with an outline and I will attempt to write an article about it.
Some of the articles may appear on our sister site Strange News Daily, but I will also include it here.
Lost Tsarist gold worth billions of pounds may have been discovered at the bottom of the world’s deepest freshwater lake.
In the past few days the crew of a mini submarine carrying out a mapping exercise in Lake Baikal spotted some ‘shiny metal objects some 1,200ft down in the murky depths.
Legend has it that 1,600 tons of gold was lost when White Army commander Admiral Alexander Kolchak’s train derailed and plunged into the Siberian lake.
Last year remnants of a train and ammunition boxes were found in the lake but in recent days the Mir-2 submersible found ‘shiny metal objects’ on the murky lake bottom, some 1,200 feet below the surface at Cape Tolsty.
‘Deep-sea vehicles found rectangular blocks with a metallic gleam, like gold, 400 metres below the surface,’ said one source.
Moscow News reported the story with the headline ‘Lost gold of the Whites found in Baikal’.
Explorers attempted to grab hold of the shiny objects with the mini-sub’s manipulator arm but failed due to the loose gravel on the lake’s floor.
Sources say that the submariners know the exact spot and are planning a new mission to determine if they have found the gold, and if so to bring a sample to the surface.
