A major earthquake will strike California on Thursday, causing major damage and likely to cause tsunami’s … or so says the website Quake Prediction.

When this was first announced on the site, which is not recognized in any way by the US Geological Survey, it went viral on Twitter. It spread so fast that even the debunking website, Snopes has written an article about it.

The Southern California Earthquake Center and the USGS have both issued statements saying that scientists can not yet predict earthquakes in advance and that neither organization has ever made a prediction.

It is unclear how the author claims to get the information about possible quakes, but it will be interesting to see whether he has access to information that mainstream scientists do not.
