A bizarre and frightening UFO phenomenon has become the talk of Brazil. The locals call it “vampire lights” or “chupa-chupa” (which means the sucker). The phenomena started appearing in the Para region of Brazil in the months of October, November and December of 1977, and during the first half of 1978. Since then reports have come in from all over Brazil and there are even reports of it as far north as Utah in the USA.

Witnesses describe the chupa as being a small square object that flies about 30 feet off the ground – around the height of the tree-tops. It emits a hum similar to that or an air conditioner or refrigerator. They fly around at night and whenever they encounter a local, they are known to attack viciously.

Incidentally, craft very similar to Chupas have also been reported at Skinwalker Ranch, Utah and Kelleher and Knapp’s book on the incident “Hunt for Skinwalker” has a chapter called “Chupas” (chapter 7) looking at the connections between the various cases.

Locals report that on encountering the strange craft, they emit a strong, bright beam of light. When this light hits them, marks that seem to resemble repeated stabs by small pins appear and this is accompanied by a loss of blood. The contact area also burns and victims complain of intense pain which lasts from weeks to years in some cases. Both men and women complain of giddiness, body numbing and headaches after the attacks.

Since most people in the area are poor, they often go out during the night to hunt food such as deer. To do this, they climb up in trees to await their prey. It is often during this period of waiting that hunters spot the chupa’s and if they are unfortunate, the chupa’s spot them. Some of the braver hunters try to shoot at them with their rifles.

Captain Uyrangê Hollanda told the Brazilian UFO Magazine [www.ufo.com.br], “We always told them: don’t shoot, don’t shoot. Once, a strong light has been aimed at a carpenter. The man had 50 or 60 years old. He took his rifle and shot at the flying saucer. The light surrounded him and he fell to the ground, almost paralyzed. For 15 days the carpenter could hardly move. In the first day the man didn’t move at all. He could see, hear and speak but it was very difficult for him to move.”

As reports of the attacks grew, the government began to worry and sent in the military to find out what was happening. Operation Saucer was launched to try and identify the phenomenon. Soldiers were sent into affected areas to conduct interviews, examine injuries and if possible, to try and observe the Chupa’s. Some of the soldiers did indeed witness the strange craft and the result was a 2000 page report with 500 odd photos and almost 16 hours of video footage. Much of this report has subsequently said to have been leaked to various UFO groups.

It strange that these UFO reports have numerous eye-witnesses and a lot of physical evidence, yet the UFO community and media pretty much ignore it. Is it because it seems as though these craft only affect rural South America?

When investigating this phenomenon, there are many questions which are raised. What are these craft? Could they be a form of alien reconnaissance? Are they collecting biological substances? Why do they appear in these isolated and relatively remote areas?

Some people have linked the Chupa’s to the Varginha incident in January, 1996. During the course of several weeks at least two and perhaps as many as six alien creatures were reportedly captured or killed and turned over to American authorities, and a UFO may have crashed. these people believe that it is these captured aliens that are responsible for the chupa’s.

Eyewitnesses described the creatures as humanoid and 3 to 4 feet tall. They had dark brown, hairless skin, big triangular heads with three short “horns” on top, and huge red eyes that were vertically oval.

Until the Brazilian government officially releases their classified report, or until we have more video footage and independent research, UFO enthusiasts and scientists will continue on their quest for answers to this mystery.
